28.02.2015_FISHERIES AWARENESS PROGRAMME

28hb Februari 2015Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources

To take advantage of the current hightened interest and concern on the landing of shark in Brunei Darussalam in the social media, the Department of Fisheries, Minister of Industry and Primary Resources conducted an awareness activity by organizing a diving and monitoring works of the reefs.  To join in the activity this morning was the Honorable Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Yahya bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Haji Bakar, Minister of Industry and Primary Resources, and Acting Director of Fisheries, Abdul Halidi Mohd Salleh, the officers of Department of Fisheries, and Vocational Wasan School.

The activity began at the two fathom rock one of the popular dives sites where old and abandoned rigs were sunk and has now become a lively marine habitat.

In an interview, the Honorable Pehin praised the Fisheries Department for organizing this timely activity.  The Honorable Pehin hope that by this activity the Department could drive home the need to protect the marine wildlife particularly shark which is the most important apex of the marine food web.  The Honorable Pehin further said that hopefully this activity would further reinforce the ban on the landing, catch and sale of shark's fin and shark product in place by the Government back in 2013.

The Honorable Pehin said he was also looking for more marine life given there were a lot of krill's and plankton now available because of the warm and calm seasons.  The Honorable Pehin also hopes to sight some sharks, particularly the whale sharks that feed on these krill's and plankton and often sighted off the Brunei coastal areas.

This programme would promote public awareness on the importance of conserving and managing our marine biodiversity the best we could. Climate change and its implication towards the social welfare and economic communities of the coastal areas and the marine ecology and coats zones is the global issue that needs to be addressed.
